The Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council and Smyrna Parks & Recreation have partnered to present an exciting public art initiative named Playful Pianos of Smyrna. Donated pianos are painted by local artists and placed in public spaces for the community to play and enjoy in 2018!
Piano Name: TBD
Location: City Hall Pavilion Donor: Susan Thayer Artist: Campbell High School Art Program Installation Date: May 3, 2018 Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council and Smyrna Parks & Recreation partnered with the amazing Campbell High School Art department on the second Playful Pianos of Smyrna offering. Susan Thayer, Cobb County Board of Education member, generously donated the baby grand piano. Art teachers Lisa Underwood and Michael Ross worked with approximately 35 CHS Students, for over 70 hours of painting to create a Keith Haring inspired, Smyrna specific, masterpiece. The intricate layout of the design incorporates Smyrna’s signature Jonquil flower, a reference to the new Sun Trust stadium, strips of bacon to honor the mayor, and a plethora of dancing figures fueled by DJ Dog. The piano has been installed under the large square pavilion in front of Smyrna City Hall on W. Spring Street.

Calling All Artists: Recycling Can Makeover
: The Smyrna Arts and Cultural Council is calling area artists to makeover recycling bins in the city to boost recycling efforts within the City of Smyrna. Artists will repaint a 65-gallon recycling bin and turn it into an extraordinary piece of art. The program encourages artists (professional or amateur) to redesign a recycling bin into an artistic masterpiece with a goal of inspiring citizens to “rethink trash” and to start recycling. Out of all submissions lucky artists will be selected to redesign a recycling bin to grace the grounds of The Smyrna Market Village. In return for their skills and talent, they will receive a payment. The bins will be used during major city events such as festivals in Smyrna Market Village to promote recycling within the city. To submit your idea, please eMail 3 to 5 pictures of your current art work and a black and white drawing of your makeover idea. _______________________________________________
Jonquil City Historical Trail
The SACC History Committee partnered with the City of Smyrna to implement the Jonquil City Historical Trail program. 20 historic locations along Atlanta Road from Windy Hill Road to Brawner Hall have been cataloged, described and mapped with historic photos of each location. The trail and the mobile app with photos and site descriptions launched on October 15, 2017. _______________________________________________
Smyrna GA Rocks
The idea is simple. Paint rocks bright colors or with short messages on them and tag the rock with #SmyrnaGARocks and hide them – preferably in plain sight – so that people find them. The person who finds the rock can take a photo of it or a selfie with the rock and post it to the Facebook #SmyrnaGARocks page. Then replace the rock with one you’ve painted or re-hide the rock you found. |
