Buddy Finethy
Saturday, May 13, 2016 |
Buddy Finethy is the legendary creator of the characters and original store aesthetics for Mellow Mushroom pizza bakers. In a wide ranging career, he's worked with Coca Cola, Frito-Lay , Rio Bravo and hundreds of other businesses big and small.
Born and raised in the upstate of South Carolina, he eventually attended Reinhardt college in Canton Ga. Underground comics, animation, album covers and psychedelic gig posters all fed his imagination. He originally pursued comic books and illustration, but found his true calling in defining identities in marketing. Synthesizing his pop culture leanings with rock and roll tastes, he eventually found an audience steeped in his same milieu. He started doing illustration work for RELIX magazine, an outlet for the Grateful Dead, in the late 1980's. Soon He joined the struggling nascent Mellow Mushroom pizza Chain, bringing the charecters of Mel, Dude and the wiz to life. He spent three decades designing tens of thousands of ads, T-Shirt, calendars and eventually moving on to finding his true canvas, environment design. The challenge of designing an interior and exterior embodiment was a source of never ending wonder, and he fell in love with creating a psychedelic fantasy land. He would remain a mainstay of the chain as creative director for three decades. In his work outside of Mellow Mushroom, he's had the pleasure of working with legendary musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Taj Mahal, the Allman Brothers and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. His work with the Chili Peppers was inducted into the permanent collection of the Hard Rock Cafe in 1997. Since retiring from Mellow Mushroom in late 2016, he's had an active roster of clients continuing his growth in new and interesting directions. You can visit his new incarnation, ARCADUS DESIGN GROUP on Facebook. Click here to enjoy his art! |

Shellton LaBron
Saturday, May 27, 2017 |
I was born in Statesboro, GA. I am visual artist, artisan, inventor and poet. I would consider my art to be mostly conceptual and innovative with bold colors and stylized renderings. I've lived mostly in the Southeast, including Florida and South Carolina. I matriculated in the early years in Georgia and completed my Bachelor of Science degrees at SC State University. While attending college, I earned two diplomas, one concentrating in Marketing and the other concentrating in Fashion Merchandising. Later when I moved to Atlanta, GA, I completed my Associates of Arts Degree in Fashion Design at Bauder College. There I read, researched and proposed doing more in the field of Fine Art. As a small child I remember questioning my mother on why I could not draw like my brother (or paint as she did), so she said to me, "You won't know until you try." From there my interest sparked, my skills blossomed, and exploration began.

Gauguin once wrote about color as the language of the listening eye, that which helps our imagination soar with inner power and mystery. From the beginning of my explorations, color has always been my driving interest, and the primary power in my work.
By using oil and acrylic paints as my surface, I create paintings emphasizing color juxtapositions and interactions. The flow of color and line, shape and form become intricately interwoven as translucent and opaque layers of glaze are laid down. Each layer creates new forms that I respond to in making the painting. I strive to combine expressionism with cubism and yet make the paintings understandable to the art critic and casual viewer. My work speaks to the universal human tendency to appreciate beauty and to find meaning in abstraction. The appreciation of the beautiful is an essential aspect of humanity, and there is a positive, almost spiritual energy involved in the experience of the beautiful. Click here to enjoy her art! |

Painting is a very personal experience for me because it's my way of expressing and sharing the stories that I tend to keep hidden in the deepest parts of my mind. As a child I would lose myself for hours in this or that Fantasy novel, pouring over tales like "Watership Down", "The Jungle Book" or "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". When I wasn't reading, I was making up stories of my own... writing them down, or drawing them out on paper... dreaming up what the places and characters looked like and how they made me feel. Some haunt me still, and beg to be released even as new images form in my mind.
Some of my paintings come from dreams (sometimes even nightmares), but many begin by unlocking that dusty vault in my mind and unwrapping a story, once imagined by a child. I think of my paintings as pages from a storybook. If you open the book to the middle and begin reading, without knowing the beginning or end, this would be where you are... a snapshot in time. I want my work to evoke a curious sense of wonder and strange familiarity in the viewer... the notion that there is a wondrous story behind it all, and the anticipation of more yet to come.” Click here to enjoy her art! |

Curtis Jones
Saturday, July 08, 2017 |
Curtis is the featured singer and artist this week.
Curtis Jones is the most original guitarist since Django Reinhardt, and the most technical since Al DI Meola. In short Curtis is one of the best guitarist on the planet" -John at Live 365. Curtis Jones reins as the most highly-respected flatpicking guitarist on the planet, expanding on the legacy forged by musicians such as Doc Watson and Tony Rice. Jones is often called by fans and critics alike, “the world’s fastest and cleanest” acoustic guitarist, an extraordinary technique that he both teaches and brings to his contemporary guitar performances and productions. But speed is only a small part of what Curtis can do. Through his pure guitar mastery, he has the ability to weave in and out of Jazz, Flamenco, and World Music styles in a way that is more original than anything that has been heard since Django Reinhardt, while taking the listener to a world of complete beauty, passion, grace and fire. Joan Friedman
Saturday, August 12, 2017 |
Local Smyrna artist Joan Friedman painted in her head long before putting paint to canvas, longing for the nudge that would make it a reality. A dozen years of making colorful jewelry was a natural segue to painting, and it was a "love at first sight" type of experience. An appreciation for various styles grew over the past twenty plus years as she and husband Lee collected original works by local and national artists. After a career in Nursing and raising two sons, Joan and Lee are now raising a Collie and a cat, and she continues to find time to also make jewelry, teach classes in jewelry making, garden, sew and volunteer year round for her favorite charity, Operation Christmas Child.

I’ve had a pencil in my hand as far back as I can remember, and a drawing of a horse was usually the outcome. Growing up, I read every horse book I could get my hands on and was inspired by the beautiful illustrations, especially ones like Walter Farley’s “Black Stallion” series. I have dabbled in many mediums over the years--oil, acrylic, watercolor, airbrush, etc.
However, after studying pastels with Lesley Harrison, an internationally-known pastelist whose work I have admired for years, pastel is my medium of choice. Lesley has my eternal gratitude for introducing me to this exciting medium that thrills me like no other. I still enjoy working with graphite pencil, too, because I “cut my artistic teeth” in this medium. It, like pastel, enables me to achieve all the subtleties needed for a portrait that comes alive! The idea is simple. Paint rocks bright colors or with short messages on them and tag the rock with #SmyrnaGARocks and hide them – preferably in plain sight – so that people find them.
The person who finds the rock can take a photo of it or a selfie with the rock and post it to the Facebook #SmyrnaGARocks page. Then replace the rock with one you’ve painted or re-hide the rock you found. Visit #SmyrnaGARocks Facebook page. |

Who doesn’t marvel at the germination of a seed as it transforms into a living thing? My abstract work conveys the mystery and energy that is inherent in this magical process. This encompasses the raw power of nature’s cycles, from new beginnings to decay and diminishment. It refers then to not only the plant life cycle but also geological processes associated with earth’s formation and destruction. This focus translates into recurring themes of germination, gestation, genesis, and erosion and corrosion
