The idea is simple. Paint rocks – you can use bright colors or put short messages on them – then tag the rock with #SmyrnaGARocks and hide them (preferably in plain sight) so that people find them. Inspired by the nationwide phenomenon, The Kindness Rocks Project, #SmyrnaGaRocks intends to spread happiness, kindness, joy and art within our community.
The person who finds a painted rock can take a photo of it or a selfie with the rock and post it to the #SmyrnaGaRocks Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/SmyrnaGARocks). Then they should replace the rock with one they’ve painted and/or re-hide the rock they found. The goal is to get as many rocks circulating through Smyrna (and surrounding areas!) to bring as many smiles as possible. Want to make it a little extra fun? If you go on a road trip, take a #SmyrnaGaRocks rock that you’ve created and hide it in another city. That’s a fun way to watch our group grow and see how big of an impact Smyrna, Ga can make! Here are some tips to get started: Where to find Rocks to paint? Home Depot had big bags of rocks for $5-$15. It's a good idea to wash these before painting. Art stores (like Michael's and Hobby Lobby) have small bags in their floral sections for $2.99. You can use their 40% off coupon to get a better deal. Dollar Tree and Dollar General have bags of rocks for $1. These have a film on them and need to be boiled or washed with hot water before painting. Find them. Please DO NOT take rocks from private property. This includes business and personal property. It's against the law to take rocks from state and national parks. What kind of paint? You should use acrylic paint or enamel paint. You can get 12-packs of paint from Michael's for $8. Use their 40% off coupon for a better deal. Wal-Mart has acrylic paint for 50 cents a bottle. What kind of sealant? Clear spray sealant works very well! If you use sharpies on your rocks please allow time to dry or the pen will smear. With sealant ALWAYS read the directions carefully because humidity and temperature affects dry times. How do I tag my rocks? You can print tags from our “file” section on the Facebook page, or write on the bottom with paint pens or sharpies – if you use a pen or Sharpie, let it dry really well first, they smear very easily. The tags and marker must be sealed before hiding. Where do I hide rocks? You can hide pretty much anywhere outside, but please be respectful. Also, think about where you are hiding. You don't want to hide in an unsafe place or area where the finder would be in danger. Please do not hide inside retail stores, unless you have personally talked to a member of management and get the okay. We want to be respectful in all aspects of this project. Thank you for understanding! Need some specific ideas? Try: • Any local parks (i.e. Taylor-Brawner Park, Lake Court Park, etc.) • Smyrna Market Village • West Village • The Battery • The Galleria • Outside of any shopping you do (grocery store, Target, gas stations, etc.) What do I do when I find rock(s)? Post your finds to our group (www.facebook.com/groups/SmyrnaGaRocks). And use the #SmyrnaGaRocks. Feel free to post to your own personal page too – spread the word to your friends and family so they can join in on the fun. The more the merrier. Then, you can keep the rocks or rehide them. If you keep it, paint another rock (or two…or ten!) to replace it so we can keep the fun and happiness going. |
